Karen New Year Festival – Myanmar

The Karen New Year is observed on the first day of Pyathoe, the tenth lunar month in the Myanmar calendar. This means it usually falls in December or January in the Western calendar and can occur in both months in the same year or not at all in some years. This festival is a time during which the Karen celebrate their unique cultural heritage and promote the preservation of their language, literature, and other traditions. One tradition for Karen New Year is consuming steamed, sticky rice to celebrate the new rice harvest. Some people wear traditional clothing, including woven tunics pulled over red “longyis”, and visit friends and family throughout the local area. Besides that is holding dancing contests where Karen dances and songs are performed. In Hpa An, you will find the largest and most colorful display of Karen wearing their traditional dress as they walk all over the city.
