OVERVIEW OF SRI LANKA

Sri Lanka was once the center of Buddhist religion and culture in ancient times due to its strategic location on the strategic maritime link between West Asia and Southeast Asia. Hinduism, Christianity, Islam, and other indigenous religions are practiced by some people in this country. The majority (74.8%) are Sinhala, but there are also Tamil, Moorish, Burgher, and other aboriginal communities. It is well-known for producing and exporting tea, coffee, rubber, and coconuts, but it also has a modern and expanding industrial economy. The natural beauty of Sri Lanka’s tropical forests, beaches, and landscapes, as well as its rich cultural heritage, make the country a popular tourist destination worldwide.

CULTURE

Buddhism, an important religion that has influenced Sri Lankan politics, culture, and society for thousands of years, has had a profound influence on Sri Lankan culture. This island is also the birthplace of two traditional cultures: Sinhala culture (centered in the ancient cities of Kandy and Anuradhapura) and Tamil culture (centered in the city of Jaffna, where the public library was destroyed in 1983 and the world’s Tamil archives are housed). More recently, particularly in urban areas, British and later Sri Lankan colonial culture emerged, heavily influenced by the West. In recent times, for example, the majority of Sri Lankans living in villages frequently consume traditional foods, make traditional items, and express themselves through traditional arts. However, economic growth and increased competition from developed countries forced Sri Lankans to change their production methods, westernize, lose their identity, and become assimilated.

FESTIVAL

Sri Lanka, the tiny teardrop shaped isle, offers myriad experiences ranging from world-class cultural and historical sites to palm-fringed beaches, verdant tea plantations and spectacular national parks teeming with wildlife. Home to the four main religions of the world, ‘the pearl of Indian Ocean’ is also a land of never-ending festivals and events celebrating all facets of life. Celebrated with great fervor and fanfare, festivals in Sri Lanka offer the perfect chance to witness & be a part of this beautiful country’s culture and traditions.

CUISINE

Sri Lankan cuisine is distinct due to the influence of colonial culture and foreign traders. Rice is a daily staple that is also available on special occasions. Meanwhile, spicy curries are the most popular lunch and dinner dishes here. Sri Lankan curries are made not only with meat or fish but also with vegetables and fruits.
